In a recent TBE message, Rabbi Mack and Joie Magnone shared their experience while attending The Union of Reform Judaism’s (URJ) 150th anniversary as an organization, celebrating their community, values and purpose. What would be more appropriate at such an event than the singing of Psalm 150 by members of the American Conference of Cantors and Guild of Temple Musicians?! This inspiring work from the 19th century was written by Louis
Lewandowski (1821-1894) who served as “Music Director at the Oranienburgerstrasse synagogue in Berlin from 1840 until the early 1890s. Not a bad gig for a Polish orphan who had arrived in Berlin, penniless, at the age of twelve. Louis’s talent enabled him to rise quickly through the ranks. He started off as just another boy soprano in an informal illiterate synagogue ensemble, and within a few years the synagogue had a modern four-part choir and he was appointed its conductor.”
Several of Lewandowski’s compositions (Bar’chu, Hodo al Eretz, Un’taneh Tokef and Enosh) have been sung at our High Holy Day services. I hope you enjoy this performance. You might recognize a certain cantor from Providence in the sea of faces.
Hallelujah! Praise God in God’s sanctuary; Praise God in the sky, God’s stronghold. Praise God for mighty acts; Praise God for God’s exceeding greatness. Praise God with blasts of the horn; Praise God with harp and lyre. Praise God with timbrel and dance; Praise God with lute and pipe. Praise God with resounding cymbals; Praise God with loud-clashing cymbals. Let all that breathes praise God. Hallelujah!
