Joie Magnone
Director of Engagement & Operations
Joie Magnone has more than 15 years of professional experience working in the Jewish Community. She has worked in multiple synagogues throughout the Northeast, at the University of Rhode Island’s Hillel and as NFTY-NE’s Regional Advisor. Joie is passionate about engaging with her Jewish community and advocating for the needs of all who are in it. She is a senior member of NATA (National Association of Temple Administration) and proudly serves on their board. Joie earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music from Westminster Choir College and earned her Master’s in Jewish Educational Leadership from HUC-JIR. She is currently pursuing her Certificate in Non-Profit Management. Joie and her husband, Zach, are parents to Elijah (12) and live in Warwick, RI.
Rachel Mersky Woda, RJE
Director of Youth & Family Engagement
Rachel comes from a long line of Jewish educators and communal professionals. After finishing an undergraduate degree in Judaic Studies and a Masters in Education and Human Development, both from The George Washington University, Rachel has spent nearly 30 years working with a wide variety of non-profit organizations at the local, regional and national level including the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, the Union for Reform Judaism, the Bureau of Jewish Education of Rhode Island, the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island and Camp JORI. She has spent time working with all aspects of these organizations including fundraising, leadership development, and strategic planning while spending significant time in areas of experiential Jewish education. Rachel was in the inaugural cohort of Fellows in the Institute for Informal Jewish Education at Brandeis University, was in the third cohort of the Senior Educator Learning Fellowship with Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies and is a certified Reform Jewish Educator from the Union for Reform Judaism. Rachel is an associate with Mersky, Jaffe & Associates, a consulting firm that helps non-profit organizations with financial and human resource development. She currently serves on the inaugural Board of Directors of the Community Beit Midrash of Rhode Island as well as on their faculty and is on the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Community Day School of Rhode Island. Rachel lives on the East Side of Providence with her husband, Craig and their sons, Jordan and Elias.
Carl Shulman
Associate Director of Youth & Family Engagement
Carl joined the TBE team after working at Temple Etz Chaim in Franklin, MA as their Senior Youth Engagement Advisor working with teens, parents and clergy to implement short and long term goals for youth leadership and institutional organization. He was also their Haverim Coordinator where he created experiential programming using cooking, the arts, the environment and the media through a Jewish lens for teens from Etz Chaim and Temple Beth Torah, a Conservative synagogue in Holliston, MA. Carl also served on the staff at Temple Beth Shalom in Needham, MA as a Jewish Learning Guide where he worked on curriculum development, worship planning, service projects, outreach programs and retreats. When not in the synagogue, you will find Carl on Lake Baboosic in Amherst, NH where he has been the Waterfront Director for Camp Young Judaea for almost a decade.
