Over the last two weeks, parents have sent their children back to school. Social media is filled with pictures of first days in PreK through college posted with immense pride, a little anxiety and a whole lot of love for a successful year of growth and learning. My friend Rabbi Michael Latz found the words that have been on my heart both as a parent and as head of our beloved Rabbi Leslie Yale Gutterman Religious School, which begins this Sunday.
A Prayer for the First Day of School: As we tuck you in this night, we pray that tomorrow the world unfolds around you, that your curiosity is nourished by fellow students and teachers who love their craft. May you expand your mind, your conscience, your compassion for your fellow students, community, and world around you. Giggle at funny stories, let lessons take you to worlds you imagine, create grand adventures with tissue paper and paper towels and markers and glue. Listen to those who are different and trust your hearts to lead your way. Challenge yourself and others to grow together, to problem solve, to be a team who respects yourself and each other. Learn the difference between intelligence and wisdom and embrace the deep joy of expanding your mind's horizons in theatre and maps and books and math and science and gym and history and puzzles and writing and field trips and art and media. Above all, dear children and the dedicated adults who guide your hands and your gifts, we hope you fall madly, passionately, exuberantly, desperately in love with learning. Never forget, with a book you are never alone.
Carl and I can’t wait to open our doors on Sunday and welcome our faculty and students back for another joyful, communal and accessible year!
