We approach shabbat as a welcome friend after a week in which we have once again seen Jews attacked in a sacred place of worship. We offer prayers of gratitude for the safe release of the hostages and prayers of healing for them and their families. We take comfort from one another and from the loving support of our many friends and neighbors who surround us with their warmth and protection.
At the edge of the sea, the Israelites were paralyzed by the sight of Pharaoh's approaching army. The Midrash teaches that God intervened and told them, “there is nothing for you to do but journey on.” (Mekhilta d’Rabbi Yishmael 14:15) And so we do. Each step forward does give us hope in a future made bright by our faith, our community and the work of our hands. We may be weary, but we remain resolute in our commitment to repair the world. Here at Temple Beth-El we will continue to gather in prayer, teach our young people the beauty of our tradition and work for justice. May this sacred community and the living Judaism that fills our hearts and our days nourish our spirits and counter the ugliness of antisemitism and hatred.
