As I write, it is the eve of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. This is a memorial day for those who perished in the Shoah and a stark reminder of the horrors that Jews and other persecuted groups faced. Reflecting on this past year and even in recent weeks, it can be challenging to feel gratitude while listening to news reports of the violence our fellow Americans have endured. And yet, we must continue to find those moments when we can be grateful for our many blessings. In these times, a meal with friends at a restaurant and a long-awaited hug are events worthy of a shehecheyanu, our prayer for gratitude. When I chant Torah this Shabbat on the anniversary of my Bat Mitzvah (parashat Shemini), I will chant our sacred text for the children of the Holocaust whose lives were snuffed out before they could realize this joyous milestone.
