Rabbi Norman Cohen teaches, “Purim’s masks may seem to conceal, if just for a moment, the chaos and pain of our present lives and enable us to escape this reality, but they may really offer us the chance to don serious masks of conscious determination to bring the light of the Divine into our world.”
Purim offers us a new perspective on this essential epidemiological tool that has shaped our past year. The good Queen Esther is a master of masking. We learn from the Megillah text that she hides her true self from the King and his court. Her name even contains the root meaning to hide. Queen Esther shows us how masking can protect and also how it can be a tool to repair the world. Masks can help us find the courage to take action even in hard times. Even as they conceal, masks reveal inner truths and hidden strength.
We are inspired to ask ourselves this Purim, what masks do we wear? What do they conceal and what do they reveal? How can our masking bring the light of the Divine into the world?
