This past Monday, we observed the Winter Solstice. I say “observed” and not “celebrated, ” because I find that the days are more challenging when it gets dark at 4:00 PM.
This year’s solstice brought an added element known to astronomers as the “great conjunction.” The two largest planets in our solar system – Jupiter and Saturn – found themselves intimately close. This alignment, in relation to the Earth is the closest they have come together in almost 400 years.
While my husband got excited about the science and math behind this phenomenon, I couldn’t help but wonder about the significance of this happening on the Winter Solstice right before Christmas, leading many to call it the “Star of Bethlehem” or the “Christmas Star.” Then I realized that the last Shabbat this year has one of the brightest lights in the sky!
This extra light, during the darkest day of a very challenging year, gave me a small sense of hope, health and peace, one that I hope you all will find as well.
