Our Torah Portion this week is called Chayei Sara, translated as “The life of Sara,” “Sara’s lifetime,” or “the span of Sara’s life.”
In reading our parsha, I was struck by its coincidental timing with Veterans Day. For me personally, Veterans Day is an emotional time. We find ourselves living in a moment in history when multiple generations of men and women have served, and continue to serve, in multiple wars and conflicts.
It is the men and women who put their lives on the line each day, the men and women who fight not only for those of us safely at home, but for the men and women that stand beside them, who I believe best understand this week’s parsha.
On this Shabbat, so many men and women are deserving of praise, blessing, and thanks for defending the freedoms and the life we too often take for granted in this country. So today, let us also look into the eyes of those whose hands we shake and see their wisdom, understanding and perception, and let us be in awe of it. These brave men and women are the true teachers of our Jewish values of life and death. On Veterans Day, they are our rabbis, our teachers, our spiritual guides, and those most deserving of God’s blessings.
It is with great anticipation that I remind everyone it is not too late to join the community and NPR's Guy Raz on Wednesday, November 18 for a conversation with Rabbi Sarah Mack. Guy Raz (@guyraz) hosts the popular podcasts How I Built This and TED Radio Hour. He is the author of How I Built This: The Unexpected Paths to Success from the World’s Most Inspiring Entrepreneurs.
The evening will motivate you to think big as you embark on your own ventures: business, non-profit, creative, and beyond.
