Next week is Shavuot, a pilgrimage holiday celebrating the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. One of the many traditions we observe to mark this holiday is studying the Torah, which may sound daunting to those who aren’t Jewish nerds like me.
Throughout my own personal Jewish journey, I have met wonderful people who have opened my eyes to the depths of knowledge and wisdom there is to be gleaned from the history and traditions of our people. I am excited that one of these wonderful teachers will be zooming with us on Tuesday afternoon, May 26th at 4:00 PM, all the way from Israel.
Gadi Ben-Dov was born in the US, raised on a kibbutz in the Galilee, and now lives in the center of Israel. He became a licensed tour guide after finishing his IDF service as an officer and traveling the world. His love of the land, and especially the people of Israel, have given him insights into this country that he shares with every visitor.
Gadi and I worked together for many years as staff members of NFTY, both in Israel and the US. He is one of my favorite teachers and has been a dear friend for more than 20 years. Fun fact – he married my friend Amy, whose dad was a rabbinical school classmate of my dad’s and Rabbi Gutterman’s. A true example of Jewish geography and “only in Rhode Island.”
Join me and my friend and teacher, Gadi Ben-Dov to learn about “The Jewish Superhero Justice League.” Together, we will delve into the major sages and scholars who have influenced the practice of Judaism as it has changed over time. From generation to generation, the Jewish people have encountered challenges, questions, and dilemmas. How have Rashi and the Rambam, Rav Kook and the Baal Shem Tov (among others) changed the way we understand our bible.
Be sure to also check out the other wonderful things we have planned in celebration of Shavuot next week . Details can be found below.

Nefesh Mountain is the place where Bluegrass, Old-Time, and American Roots music meet with Jewish heritage and tradition. Creators, band leaders and husband and wife team, Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg, are the heart of this eclectic offering, pioneering a new world of American culture which seamlessly blends their deep love for American and Western musical forms with their own cultural backgrounds as Jewish Americans.
