Message from Rachel Mersky Woda
Part of becoming b’nei mitzvah is understanding what it means exactly to be considered a “Jewish adult.” Over the last few years, we have made that a significant goal of the 7th grade curriculum. What we have learned is that while the b’nei mitzvah milestone is a very individual event for our children, learning and preparing together as a community makes the experience more meaningful.
As adults, we participate in social justice by choosing to do work that is personally meaningful to us, resonant with Jewish values we hold dear in conjunction with friends and peers. Why should we ask our students to do any differently? Our seventh graders chose a class social justice project based upon these principles. Individual “Mitzvah Projects,” of the past have transformed into a reflective group process.
This year, the 7th graders have chosen to raise money for Nothing But Nets , an organization that purchases bed nets for children in Africa. For only $10.00, a bed net can prevent a child from being bitten by mosquitos that carry malaria, one of the world’s deadliest, but most preventable illnesses. Since 1996, Nothing But Nets has provided 13 million bed nets and saved millions of lives.
This Monday night, March 9 at 5:30 PM at our Community Wide Purim Celebration, the 7th graders will be running a Nothing But Nets indoor basketball game. The 7th graders will be selling tickets allowing students to take shots in our basketball net. All proceeds will be donated to this worthwhile cause to purchase as many bed nets as possible.
We hope you will join us for a fun-filled evening and help support the efforts of our newest Jewish adults.
