I was recently in Israel on a family trip to attend a dear friend’s wedding. It was my first trip back in seven years, and my husband’s in 22 years while it was the first visit for both of our teenage boys. It was never our intention for their first time in Israel to be with us. The summer camp they attend sends teens after their sophomore year of high school, but COVID and conflict made that opportunity disappear for our oldest son.
So off we flew, to spend 10 days giving our kids a taste of what we both love about Israel, a few touristy things and a lot of off-the-beaten path excursions. I have now been to Israel nearly 10 times, as a tourist, a trip leader, and for work, but this trip was by far the most meaningful. To see Israel through the eyes of my teenage sons as they experienced it for the first time was a wonderful gift. I was able to watch those eyes fill with wonder as they saw the mezuzot on every door in the airport as we arrived. I was able to hear them catch their breath at the sheer size of the stones that make up the holy sites in the Old City. I was able to hear the curiosity in their voices as they asked questions of the teens we met along the way comparing their life experiences. I was able to see their noses fill with the scents of fresh spices and strong coffee we found in the open markets. I was able to see the smiles as they filled their mouths with delicious foods they had never tried before. To give them a chance to build their own personal and direct connection with the land and people of this beautiful and complex country felt critical to us as they navigate new chapters in their journeys as young adults. To give them the chance to experience it all firsthand will allow them to continue exploring that connection in a more meaningful way than simply hearing Israel mentioned at Temple or on the news. You can create or even strengthen your own connection with Israel by signing up for our TBE Adult Israel Exploration Trip, November 6-17, 2022. Consider registering today and give yourself a chance to experience all of the beauty and complexity Israel has to offer firsthand.
