Please join us on Monday, August 3, at 7 PM as Betsy Shimberg, congregant and Interim Director of the Swearer Center for Public Service, leads our group through a workshop that she initially created with Brown students called "Let's Talk About the White Savior Complex." This interactive session will consider the dynamics of service, why we are called to it, and how our whiteness contributes to the ways we engage with social justice and anti-racist work. We'll discuss context for service, as well as overarching power structures and deep-seated racial tensions that may be embedded in our call to serve. There will be time at the end of the workshop for conversation about next steps and whether a group would like to continue interrogating our whiteness together. Please access the workshop using this
Betsy Shimberg is Interim Director of the Swearer Center for Public Service and an Associate Dean at Brown University, where she advises and prepares students for effective community and civic engagement. Betsy has worked with multiple nonprofit organizations throughout her career where her interests in education, advocacy and policy intersect and she has also served on many nonprofit boards. She and her family have been members of Temple Beth-El since 2015. Both of her children thrived in PROVTY; she is currently the Vice President for Planning and Development at Temple Beth-El.
